Fortunately, we do not have to call an for an ambulance very often. However, for that one situation that could suddenly happen, we have to be prepared and know how to call an ambulance. Use the following suggestions to prepare yourself in knowing how to call an ambulance in the event of an emergency.

  1. Step 1

    Pick up your phone and dial 911 for an ambulance if you are at home and a medical emergency comes up. Your spouse may hit his head in a fall, someone had a heart attack or you witness a car hitting a child outside your window. These are all reasons to call an ambulance by calling 911. Describe to the operator the medical emergency. Stay on the phone with the 911 operator to describe the medical emergency.

  2. Step 2

    Use your cell phone to call 911 if you see an emergency on the highway or you're away from home when the emergency situation requiring an ambulance takes place. In the event that you are pregnant, call 9-1-1 for an ambulance if your go into labor. Have your doctor's emergency numbers programmed in your cell phone, so you have the option to call the doctor and they will send an ambulance, or if you pass out, the number will be in your cell phone contacts.

  3. Step 3

    Find out the phone numbers and contact information for ambulance medical emergencies if you live in an area that doesn't have 911 service. You may have to call the police department, fire department or the local hospital for a medical emergency that requires an ambulance. Find out the contact numbers ahead of time so you have it when you need it most.

  4. Step 4

    Teach your children how to dial 911 for an ambulance or post the number for an ambulance beside your phone in a visible location, so that a child, a spouse or someone else can call for an ambulance when needed.

  5. Step 5

    Post the emergency phones to contact an ambulance or emergency medical staff directly if you have a family member with a serious or terminal illness and you know you will be in need of an ambulance soon.     Take precautions when visiting a foreign country, as their emergency and ambulance system will vary from those in the United States. Ask your travel agent or a hotel manager as to what the phone numbers are and what the procedures are for calling for an ambulance in a medical emergency.
