Indigo, a dark blue or black dye made from the indigo plant, has been used in North Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years. Indigo isn't used as much now that synthetic dyes are readily available, but it's still favored as a healthy alternative to synthetic dyes. Combined with henna, indigo can be used to dye the hair deep raven black, blue-black, burgundy-black or deep purple.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay a tarp, drop cloth, or plenty of newspapers on the floor in the area where you plan to apply the indigo, and be sure to wear plastic gloves. Indigo will stain nearly anything, including your skin, so wear old clothes and use old towels.

  2. Step 2

Dye your hair first with henna, which will help the hair absorb the indigo. Most people apply the indigo immediately after the henna, but it can also be done later.

  3. Step 3

Mix the indigo with water until it resembles a thick, lumpy paste. It will smell like frozen peas and will be green in color.

  4. Step 4

Apply the indigo immediately, working it completely through the hair. It will be messy, but don't be afraid to rub it in by the handful and slather it through the hair. Use a tissue to wipe away any dye from your skin.

  5. Step 5

Cover your hair with plastic wrap or a plastic cap and wrap a large towel around it. Leave the indigo in your hair for at least two hours. The longer your leave the dye in your, the darker the result will be.

  6. Step 6

Remove the towel and the plastic and rinse the indigo completely from your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • The color of the hair will gradually deepen with each application of henna and indigo.
  • It's possible to apply henna and indigo at the same time, but this is recommended for people with hair that is already black or dark brown.
  • Never bleach your hair after using indigo. It can turn your hair green.
  • Consider your decision to use indigo very carefully, because once you use it, it will be in your hair for a long time. Try applying some to some hair from your hairbrush to see how it looks, and how much indigo it takes to get the color you want.
