How to Buy M-Rated Games

M-rated games are video games with a mature rating for people 17 years and older. The ESRB determines the ratings for video games. M-rated games have violence, gore, sex, nudity or questionable language. Most video game retailers will not sell you an M-rated game unless you're over 17. If you're looking to buy an M-rated game, there are some things to keep in mind.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Do some research to find out why the game is M-rated. Read the reviews of the games and check out some screen shots or videos of people playing the games. Sites such as GameDaily, Game Rankings and IGN can help you do this.
Step2
Make sure you're of age. Technically, if you're under 17, stores aren't supposed to sell you the M-rated games. If your parents have approved the purchase, ask them to pick it up for you. Don't steal the game or get into an argument with the salesperson. It's not cool.
Step3
Consider renting the game to find out if it's something you want to play. This is a great way to convince a parent that the game's not too bad if you have a parent who doesn't want you to purchase an M-rated game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Minors cannot purchase a video game with an A-rating or adults only (18 and over) rating. These games are extremely graphic.
  • Some retailers, such as Wal-Mart may not sell M-rated games at all or may cover up the boxes with black sleeves.
