Draw a Dandelion

Dandelions are a hearty flower that grow in many different types of environments. Because they are present in so many outdoor spaces, learning to draw them will make drawing landscapes somewhat easier. A simple dandelion flower drawing also makes an attractive picture on its own.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your art supplies together. For a color drawing of a dandelion in its flowering stage, you will need green, yellow and brown. A black and white drawing requires only a pencil or pen.

    • 2

Have a picture of a dandelion or the real flower ready to use as a model.

    • 3

Draw the flower stem first. The line will be two lines that are parallel, and they will usually have a slight curve. Don't try to make it too straight or it will look unnatural.

    • 4

Sketch the overall shape of the flower. Once you have the general shape and size of the flower, fill it in with more distinct lines. Mark the center of the flower with a small mark. This is the point where the petals will originate.

    • 5

Fill in the petals as long teardrops that originate from the center. The petals will be of various lengths, depending on where on the flower they are located. Draw the correct lengths by looking closely at your model dandelion. Let the overlapping ones overlap in the drawing to keep the picture looking realistic.

    • 6

Inspect the model flower to determine how many leaves are on the underside of the dandelion. Draw the visible portions of the leaves. The edges of each leaf should be serrated. If you have roots protruding from the bottom of the stem, draw those last. They will have a thick brown center with a few smaller roots protruding from the center.
