How to Debug a Tamagotchi

A Tamagotchi is a pocket-sized digital pet created in Japan but popular worldwide. Typically, the development of a Tamagotchi character depends on the level of care it receives from its owner. Debugging, however, allows users to choose from all available characters, including secret characters, and to run their Tamagotchis in hypertime.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard star screwdriver
  • Small screwdriver
  • Transparent tape
  • Lead pencil
  • Pencil eraser

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the two larger screws from the Tamagotchi's battery cover, using a standard star screwdriver. Be careful, as the plastic is prone to crack and break under pressure.

    • 2

Disconnect the battery cover by removing the four remaining screws with a small screwdriver. Screwdrivers commonly found in eyeglass repair kits work best for this task.

    • 3

Take out the battery and open the Tamagotchi. Reinstall the battery, securing it with a small piece of transparent tape.

    • 4

Look for the word "debug" below and to the left of the battery. Just beneath the indicator, find a small, dark circle with a line through it. Gently rub the tip of a lead pencil across the line several times, making sure not to touch any other internal part of the Tamagotchi.

    • 5

Press the "reset" buttons on the back of the Tamagotchi and on the screen. The tape should prevent the battery from falling out, but keep your hand over it for added security. Press the "A" button to test whether or not your debugging was successful. If still unable to switch characters, you must rub more lead onto the line.

    • 6

Peel the tape from the battery and reassemble the Tamagotchi. Enjoy experimenting with your new characters.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can reverse Tamagotchi debugging by erasing the lead marks. Any color of eraser works, but some users report more success with white than pink. Again, be gentle to avoid causing irreversible damage.

  • After pressing "A" to view new characters, press "B" to select a new character.

  • After debugging, press "C" to start hypertime, which makes the Tamagotchi run significantly faster. Hypertime resets after the Tamagotchi engages in basic functions such as eating or using the toilet. After these actions, press "C" again to resume.

  • Debugging only works with American Connection and Japanese Plus Tamagotchis. In Japanese Plus versions, the line you must rub is between two small squares above the word "debug."

  • Debugging a Tamagotchi is fun but can destroy your cherished friend. Following the above steps does not guarantee success.
