Curl Hair With Rags

If you're old enough and grew up in the South, you're probably familiar with the way women curled their hair with rags. Although it was done out of necessity in those days, it's become a preferred way to produce soft curls without damaging the hair the way rollers and pins often do. It's also a comfortable way to sleep with your hair rolled up. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton sheet or fabric
  • Scissors (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Make your rag strips. An old cotton sheet makes good curlers because they are soft absorbent and have little lint. Cut or rip the sheet into strips that are 6 inches long and 1 inch wide.

    • 2

Wash your hair and condition it in the evening as you normally would. Use your fingers to remove the tangles from your hair and allow it to dry almost completely.

    • 3

Section off your hair into 1-inch sections at a time and roll each one around a rag strip. The size of the sections you'll use depends on the thickness of your hair.

    • 4

Roll the rag up to the scalp and tie the ends together with a bow. The type of curl you end up with depends on the tightness and thickness of the roll.

    • 5

Finish rolling all of your hair and go to bed. The rag curlers are more comfortable and won't come out easily during the night.

    • 6

Remove all of the rags and style your hair in the morning as you normally would. Wash and dry your rag curlers as needed so you can reuse them repeatedly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't want to wash your hair at bedtime, mist it slightly or dampen it with a comb before you roll it up with your rag curlers.

  • Be patient because it may take a little practice to become proficient at using rags to curl your hair. Once you get the hang of the technique, you can have a head of hair rolled up in no time.

  • Experiment with the amount of hair you roll on each strip and the tightness of the roll.
