How to Cope With Being Grounded

If your parents have grounded you from going out with friends or have forbidden you from using the computer or watching television, it can seem as if your entire world has crashed down around you. Follow these steps to cope with being grounded and make the most of a bad situation.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Acknowledge the behavior that resulted in your grounding. If your parents see that you've admitted you did something wrong, they may decrease the length of your punishment.
Step2
Offer a sincere apology for your behavioral infraction. Tell your parents you understand that you did something wrong and that you will never do it again.
Step3
Cope with being grounded by adhering to the restrictions your parents set. If you're caught breaking the rules of the grounding, you might find yourself serving a longer sentence.
Step4
Consider asking for an end to your grounding after a few days have passed. If you've apologized for what you've done and you've obeyed the rules of your grounding, your parents might consider ending your punishment early if you ask nicely.
Step5
Make the most of your time while you're grounded. Consider cleaning your room, getting ahead in your homework or writing a letter to your grandparents, all of which you likely wouldn't do if you weren't grounded.

Tips & Warnings

  • When offering your apology to your parents, avoid using sarcasm. If you want them to forgive you and possibly reduce your grounding sentence, it's essential that you are sincere and truthful.
  • Don't cope with being grounded by lashing out at your parents and siblings. After all, you're the one in the wrong, at least according to your parents, and any further bad behavior might cause them to ground you even longer.
