How to Buy a Used Wetsuit

Wetsuits are necessary gear for some water sports. They provide protection from the water and salt when diving, surfing, body boarding, snorkeling and participating in many other sports. Buying a used wetsuit is usually a lot more affordable than buying a new wetsuit.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on the style of used wetsuit you need. This will depend on what sport you will be doing in your wetsuit. Some of the options are short, full, long and three quarter.

  2. Step 2

Inspect the suit for signs of damage, patches or holes. Colors will appear faded on an old wetsuit because of exposure to salt and sun.

  3. Step 3

Check the stitching. Wetsuits stretch which causes stress at the seams. Seam stitching will appear stretched or worn in an old wetsuit.

  4. Step 4

Look at the condition of the material. Neoprene should feel stretchy, flexible and soft. A wetsuit that is stiff is old and hasn't been cared for properly.

  5. Step 5

Ask about the previous care and use. A wetsuit that is well cared for can last for a full season if you use it an average of three times a week or more.

  6. Step 6

Try the used wetsuit on if possible. Sometimes, even with proper care, a wetsuit will shrink slightly because the neoprene will become less flexible.

  7. Step 7

Disinfect the used wetsuit thoroughly once you purchase it to protect yourself from any germs that may be lingering in the wetsuit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some small holes in neoprene can be easily fixed. If the used wetsuit seems like it is in good condition except for a small hole, consider having the hole fixed if you will be using the wetsuit for non-pressurized water sports.
  • Never buy a used wetsuit that has a foul smell or obvious major defects.
