How to Build a BMX Wooden Ramp

Building your own BMX ramp is a great way to make it exactly as you want and to have it at your disposal whenever the urge to ride hits. You can alter the plans depending on whether the ramp will be permanent or if you want to move it from location to location. You can also adjust the angle of the ramp. Read on to learn how to build a BMX wooden ramp.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • 3 sheets 3/4 inch plywood
    • 2 sheets 1/4 inch Masonite
    • 10 2x4's cut to 70 1/2 inches
    • 5 lb. box of 2 inch drywall screws
    • 5 lb. box of nails
    • Power saw
    • Hammer
    • Chalk line
    • Drill
    • Pencil
    • Tape measure
    • Saw horses
      • 1

Place one sheet of plywood on a flat surface and measure up 3 1/2 feet. Mark the plywood at that point. Go to the other corner and measure up 6 feet. Make a similar mark. Use your chalk line to make a straight line and cut that triangle out.

      • 2

Use this triangle as a template and cut an identical piece out of the other end of the plywood. These are the walls of your ramp.

      • 3

Frame the ramp by spacing nine 2x4's along the surface of the walls. Make sure the top and the bottom 2x4's are laid with the 4 inch side flat to create a smooth transition. Place the last 2x4 at the bottom-back of the ramp. Use screws to secure the 2x4's to the walls for extra strength and stability.

      • 4

Cut one sheet of plywood to 4 feet wide and 83 inches tall. Put this on the left side of the ramp so the sides and bottom are flush. Tack it into place with nails. Use your chalk like to mark the studs and then go back and secure it with screws, staggering their placement.

      • 5

Saw another sheet of plywood to 83 inches tall and 2 feet wide. Place it on the right side of the ramp, making sure the edge is tight against the first sheet and flush at the bottom. This is critical. Secure with screws, staggering their placement.

      • 6

Size the Masonite so you have two pieces that measure 42 1/4 inches by 6 feet. Place the first sheet so that the side measuring 6 feet spans the width of the ramp, with a sliver of the bottom extending past the end of the ramp itself.

      • 7

Mark the studs with the chalk line, pre-drill to avoid splitting, and screw them into place. Put the remaining sheet of Masonite into place, making sure the seam is as tight as possible. Pre-drill and screw into place.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Use the sawhorses to hold the materials you're cutting.

    • Create a curved BMX ramp, such as a quarter pipe or half pipe, by wetting the plywood thoroughly and using bricks or other heavy objects in the center to create the curve of your choice. Frame the ramp according to the curve and build as usual.

    • Always wear protective eyewear when working with power tools.
