Things You'll Need:

  • Hair color removal kit (if needed)
  • Hair bleaching kit
  • Warm water
  • Gentle shampoo

Enlist the aid of a good friend to help you bleach your hair. An extra pair of hands will come in handy.

  2. Step 2

Remove any existing hair color that is on your hair using special products such as One 'n Only Colorfix available from Folica.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a hair bleaching kit from a company that is well known and has a good reputation in the hair industry. Try a bleaching kit like Manic Panic from Folica, or check with your hairdresser for a professional recommendation.

  4. Step 4

Apply bleach starting at the back of the head where the hair is the darkest color making certain to follow the directions for the brand you are using.

  8. Step 8

Shampoo with a gentle shampoo to remove the bleach from your hair. If desired, rinse with lemon juice or white vinegar to neutralize any remaining bleach residue that left on your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear rubber gloves when working with hair chemicals.
  • Bleaching hair is a tricky process that can often cause significant hair damage. It is best to have an experienced, professional hair colorist bleach your hair.
  • Be aware that some lower priced hair colors may have metallic salts as an ingredient. Check the ingredients on the box to see if there are metallic salts. If you've used the product before, there's a possibility that any build up of these salts will have an adverse effect on your hair, which can cause permanent damage.
  • If you have dark or medium brown hair, you'll need to bleach your hair several times to achieve platinum blonde color.

on 3/11/2009 I have medium brown hair and I went platinum. I used a 40 volume developer and L'Oreal powdered bleach. It took 3 times, (over the course of a week) But it turned out great.

on 2/1/2009 I am tired of going to the salon and paying all that money; Getting damage there and still not to platinum I wanted. reneev has had the most helpful comment thus far.
All the damage I have ever gotten has been in the salon; Not at home.

on 12/19/2008 good article, but manic panic is garbage, you need to get 30 volume developer and toning bleach, along with toner like ultra light platinum blonde with a blue-violet base to kill any brassiness or yellow tones...and then a deep conditioning treatment...otherwise you are going to have fried hair that is a disaster.
