A mustache may enhance a man's appearance. However, for a woman it can be embarrassing and unattractive. Waxing and laser hair removal are options to remove a mustache, but they can be painful. Bleaching a mustache is another way to reduce its appearance. It can be done at home and is relatively inexpensive. Read on to learn how to bleach a mustache.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Select a product made specifically for facial hair. Avoid using hair dyes or peroxide to bleach a mustache. They can be too harsh for your face and cause burning.
Step2
Read the directions. If there are products to measure or mix, follow specifications exactly. Some bleaching products have an activator to add to the bleach. Be sure to use the correct proportions. Wear old clothes because you may get bleach on them.
Step3
Consider doing a patch test. Apply a small amount of the bleaching product to your arm. Wait a few minutes and wipe it off. If your arm is very red or develops a rash or red bumps, you may be allergic. Discontinue use. If the patch test is clear, you may bleach your mustache.
Step4
Remove any makeup from your face. Use a gentle facial wash to clean your upper lip. Dry thoroughly.
Step5
Apply the bleach to the upper lip. Be sure you have the bleach spread evenly across the entire upper lip. Use a Q-tip or popsicle stick to spread the bleach. Avoid using your finger. Wipe off any excess bleach from anywhere other than your upper lip.
Step6
Set a timer. Be sure to stick to the directions. If you leave the bleach on too long, it may burn your skin. However, if you take it off too soon, it may not bleach the mustache correctly.
Step7
Use a damp washcloth to remove the bleach from your upper lip. Apply any soothing cream that may be suggested in the directions. Some mustache bleaching creams come with an additional cream to apply after bleaching.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind bleaching won't remove the hair. It makes it less noticeable. Bleaching will have to be repeated as new hair grows in.
  • Be aware that if the bleach burns as soon as you apply it to your upper lip, you should wash it off immediately.
  • Don't put the bleaching product anywhere near your eyes. Don't use it for anywhere else on your face.
  • Keep in mind bleaching may not work for every woman. Bleaching may not be entirely effective for women with very dark coarse hair on their upper lip.
