How to Become the Head Cheerleader

Every cheerleading squad has a head cheerleader, someone the other girls can look to as a leader. With dedication and practice, you can become the head cheerleader of your squad. Remember, the head cheerleader is not necessarily the most popular girl, but the one who works hardest. Being the head cheerleader is really something to cheer about.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice, practice and practice. Know the cheers and motions. Put your heart and soul into cheering. Don't just go through the motions. Yell loud and clear when the cheer calls for it.

    • 2

Condition your body for cheerleading. Take gymnastics and do core-strengthening exercises. Increase your flexibility. Be fit and athletic.

    • 3

Help your fellow cheerleaders. If someone is having a tough time learning a cheer, take extra time to go over the motions with them.

    • 4

Assist your coaches. Start practices. Lead the other cheerleaders through routines and cheers. Be the voice of the squad when communicating with the coaches.

    • 5

Create cheers. Make suggestions that could make a cheer better. Add new moves to existing routines and see if the coaches will want to incorporate your suggestions. Don't be afraid to speak up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Learn tumbles, cartwheels and handstands when taking gymnastic courses. These moves can be added to your cheerleading routine.

  • Take dance and yoga classes to help increase your flexibility.

  • Become active in other ways to help your cheerleading squad. Help to organize and participate in fundraising events and with publicity.

  • Don't let becoming head cheerleader go to your head. Always remember you are part of the squad no matter what position you might hold.

  • Don't let friendships get in the way of being a head cheerleader. If you have a friend on the squad who is not performing as she should, don't be afraid to let her know she needs to work harder. Don't be mean, but be firm.

  • Don't be late for practices or games. Set an example. As a head cheerleader, you must be a role model to the rest of the squad.
