The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) exists to promote the martial art of Taekwondo and hold competitions between members from all over the world. Children and adults take part in events that feature controlled fighting (sparring) and weapons exercises. With separate categories for different ages, all Taekwondo members can find an event in which to compete. Read on to learn how to become successful in Taekwondo competitions.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Join your local Taekwondo School in order to be eligible to compete. As a member of the WTF, each school acts as an extension of the group, teaching students with an approved system of instruction. See the Resources section for a link.

  2. Step 2

Qualify to go to a WTF tournament. Your instructor, based upon your progress in class, will determine whether you are ready for competition. As long as you attend regular classes and progress in belt rank, you will be eligible to compete.

  3. Step 3

Spend additional time practicing your kicks and punches outside of regular class time. Get together with another Taekwondo buddy and take turns holding a kick bag for each other.

  4. Step 4

Install a full-length mirror on a wall where you can see your kicking and punching techniques to improve them before entering a tournament.

  5. Step 5

Enter a local tournament and register to compete in both sparring and kata events. Kata is a controlled form of exercise, designed to mimic defense moves in real life. A panel of judges will watch your routine and give you a score based upon your ability to do the movements correctly.

  6. Step 6

Sign up for a regional competition after you have placed well in a local tournament. Regional events feature competitors from a larger area and when you are successful there, you will register to compete in national events.
