When snowboarding it's just as important to learn how to fall as it is to ride. Most injuries occur when you bail on a snowboard. These injuries are usually to the arms, wrists and shoulders caused by an unsuccessful bail. Follow these steps to learn how to successfully bail on a snowboard and prevent major injury.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Learn the basics of how to turn, move and stop before you snowboard. You may be able to correct yourself instead of having to bail.
Step2
Relax and don't fight the fall. Attempt to land on your bottom so that you slide down the slope instead of rolling. If you roll you will pick up speed quickly.
Step3
Tuck your arms into your sides after you bail. Stick your bottom out in a sitting position and push your legs forward to slow yourself down. You should land on your bottom.
Step4
Roll with the bail if you are unable to land on your bottom. Pull your arms into your sides and tuck your chin to your chest. This will prevent any broken limbs or facial injuries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your snowboarding leash attached to your ankle. When you have to bail you won't lose your snowboard on the slope.
  • Buy impact shorts if you are a beginning snowboarder or if you attempt stunts and wear these shorts under your snowboarding pants. The padding in these shorts will cushion your fall.
  • Never attempt to catch yourself with your arms or hands when you bail. You can snap your wrist or arm.
