Stitchers get an enormous feeling of satisfaction when they finish a needlepoint project. The bad news is they still have to back and finish the project. It is not difficult, but if not done correctly, the finished project will look messy and unprofessional. Read on to learn how to back a needlepoint piece.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Prepare Needlepoint Piece for Backing

  1. Step 1

Wash needlepoint project with a mild soap. Projects may not look dirty, but even the oil from one's fingers will attract dirt and discolor the project.

  2. Step 2

Rinse thoroughly. Use clean water for each subsequent rinse. All traces of soap must be removed. Let dry completely.

  3. Step 3

Trim project so all sides are even and square. Block project, if necessary.

  4. Back the Needlepoint Project

  5. Step 1

Measure and cut a piece of cardboard to the same size as finished project. Make sure cardboard will fit easily inside of frame, allowing room for the thickness of the needlepoint canvas.

  6. Step 2

Spray adhesive on the cardboard. Carefully place your project centered onto the cardboard. Gently smooth out any stray wrinkles.

  7. Step 3

Apply even pressure over entire the project to ensure adhesion to cardboard. Place your project under several heavy books until adhesive dries.

  8. Step 4

Secure edges of project on back of cardboard with masking tape. Keep fabric as smooth as possible.

  9. Step 5

Decide if your frame will have glass covering the project. If not using glass, spray stain repellent/sealer on your project to protect against dust and future stains.

  10. Step 6

Insert and secure backed project in frame.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repositionable spray adhesive is more forgiving than permanent spray adhesive. It allows the possibility to fix placement accidents easily without ruining needlepoint stitching.
