Be in good physical condition. Loosen your muscles before you begin skateboarding to avoid extra strain. Stay as loose as possible to help you maintain your balance.

Wear your safety gear. This should include your helmet, your wrist protector, your knee and elbow pads. Also make sure the safety gear fits you properly. If it doesn't fit right it can affect your balance.

Take lessons from a reputable teacher. Learn the proper way to start and stop your skateboard.

Know what your comfort zone is and stay in it. While it is good to learn new tricks on the skateboard, you don't have to learn them all at once. Master one skill and build on it.

Perform a safety check of your board every time you get on it. Adjust the trucks on your board to your comfort level. Avoid using the skateboard if the trucks are too loose. It can affect your balance and result in a fall.

Skateboard in a safe location. Try to find a place that has even pavements and a smooth surface. Avoid skateboarding around cars.

Protect your head if you do fall. Wrap your arms around your head if you can. Try not to stop the fall with your arms. You may wind up breaking your wrists instead.
