Riding in go karts can be great fun for everyone in the family. Racing around a go kart track is an excellent way to bond with your kids. Proper instruction is required, however, to teach kids safety measures to avoid a go kart accident. With the right precautions, you and your family can have a great go kart riding experience. Read on to learn how to avoid a go kart accident.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drive to control the vehicle, and don't drive too fast. You must keep the go kart under control at all times to avoid causing an accident and possibly injuring yourself or others.

  2. Step 2

Pay close attention to your go kart's operation. Odd noises, smells and vibrations can be indications of a serious problem that could leave you stranded in the center of the go kart track. With other riders zooming around, that's not a safe place.

  3. Step 3

Stay with the flow of traffic. There's a right of way on go kart tracks, just as when driving a car. You can cause an accident by going in the wrong direction.

  4. Step 4

Use all of the safety equipment, including straps. Loose items flung onto the track can create a multiple go kart pileup.

  5. Step 5

Pay close attention to the referee flags as they can alert you to dangers on the track ahead. Green means all is well on the racetrack. Yellow indicates that you must slow down and not pass. Red is the signal to stop and black means you must leave the track (usually due to a problem with your equipment). Follow the flag directions at all times.

  6. Step 6

Pay attention to the body language of other drivers. Maintain eye contact whenever you can. Even a brief glance can give you a great deal of information and help you avoid accidents.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go karts are powerful pieces of equipment, not toys. Never give children control over go karts designed for adults because serious injuries can occur.
