When you think of marching band, your mind may immediately see high school students on a football field during a halftime show, but high school isn't the only opportunity to be in a marching band. Whether you're in high school, college, involved in a private non-profit organization or veteran's association, a marching band family can be in your future. Read on to learn how to be in a marching band.

Step1
Choose an instrument to play in the marching band. If playing an instrument is not your thing, there are other positions within a marching band unit--field commander, flag line or majorette.
Step2
Talk to others that are in a marching band. The best advice for any new endeavor is straight from someone already involved. Ask family members or friends if they know of a marching band you can participate in.
Step3
Watch competitions, shows or parades to learn more about the marching band you're interested in. Watching the marching band's performance and actions can guide your ultimate decision to approach that marching band or look for another.
Step4
Join a marching band unit. You've completed Steps 1 through 3 and have decided that you do want to be in a marching band. Your next move is choosing a marching band.
Step5
Attend a marching band camp or training sessions to learn marching steps and routines. There may be group training sessions or individual lessons for you to participate in.
Step6
Practice your instrument and routine together. Your marching band unit needs your full commitment to them through hard work, dedication and commitment to your position within the family.
