Step 1
Take the time to read books such as "Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior, Freshly Updated" by Judith Martin or "Emily Post's Etiquette" by Peggy Post.
-
Step 2
Practice etiquette skills at home with your family and friends to perfect your skills. Become comfortable with new or different forms of behavior.
-
Step 3
Review the proper etiquette for specific activities before attending important events. Read up on proper golfing behavior before the company golf outing or research what fork to use before attending a formal dinner.
-
Step 4
Enroll in a general or business etiquette class to perfect your skills. Find etiquette classes locally by contacting your local community college or community center.
-
Step 5
Research the social customs of different cultures before traveling. Prevent a disastrous business deal or social meeting by learning the social rules of the culture you are visiting and by using those rules upon your arrival.
-
Step 6
Watch the behavior of new social groups before you interact with them. Follow the hostess' lead when dining. Make a conscious choice to follow or ignore the rules of etiquette in situations where they do not seem to apply. Decide if you want to set yourself apart from the crowd or join an ill-mannered crowd depending on the situation.
