Things You'll Need:
- Small vase
- Bleach or regular aspirin
- Flowers
- Sharp knife
- Scissors
- Baby's breath (optional)
-
Step 1
Consider the containers you have available, the flowers you'll be arranging and the display area. For instance, a small vase and tiny flowers would get lost if placed on a large dinner table filled with lots of dishes and food. On the other hand, small vases are more intimate in nature and can really show off one or two large, colorful blooms, such as red roses, orange Gerbera daisies or yellow begonias.
-
Step 2
Wash your vase and fill it about three-quarters full with cold water. Stir in a small amount of bleach or one regular aspirin until dissolved.
-
Step 3
Use a sharp knife and carefully rake off any thorns on the flowers. To help keep your arrangement looking fresh longer, cut or pull off any leaves that will end up under water.
-
Step 4
Trim off stems with scissors before arranging flowers for a small vase. If your vase is small and tall, you'll want the stems about twice as high as the vase. For small and short vases, cut the stems so they stand about one-quarter inch higher than the top of the vase. For better hydration, snip the stems at an angle under running water.
-
Step 5
Place the flowers in the vase, making sure they're all the same height. Add a small amount of baby's breath or ornamental grass throughout the flowers, if desired.
