Instructions

    • 1

Measure the areas of your truck where you plan to put the lettering. Each area should be as flat as possible for the vinyl to stick well.

    • 2

Design your sign. Each letter should be at least three or four inches in height for easy visibility on the road.

    • 3

Take the design to a graphics shop that makes vinyl signs. The experts may have suggestions to fine-tune the graphics for better visibility.

    • 4

Wash the truck well. Remove any signs of road tar, bug remains or soap scum. Let the truck dry well.

    • 5

Place the vinyl sign on the side of the truck, making sure it is straight. Attach the sign to the side of the truck with a piece of masking tape across the top of the sign's outer covering.

    • 6

Raise the vinyl sign on its masking tape hinge. Starting at the top, pull a small amount of the backing away from the vinyl sign. As you pull away the backing let the sign come into contact with the side of the truck.

    • 7

Squeegee the sign's outer covering as you continue to remove the backing. Work from the center out to avoid air bubbles. If at all possible, let the sign set in place by the squeegee rather than letting it settle on its own. Remove the sign's top covering and the masking tape hinge when you finish.

    • 8

Remove any air bubbles with a tiny prick from a sewing needle. Squeegee out the air but try not to overwork the vinyl or you might distort the lettering.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to keep letters to a minimum because passing motorists only have a few seconds to read the sign and for it to make an impression.

  • Make sure the air temperature is warm enough for the vinyl to be flexible.
