It is vital that some programs run when Windows XP is booted onto a computer. Some other programs may be set to run at start up on your computer that aren't needed. These programs only take up RAM and cause your computer to run more slowly and elevate the likeliness of a crash. Follow the steps below to alter the start up programs in Windows XP.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Windows XP

Step1
Choose the "Start" menu in Windows XP, and choose "Run" from the right side of the "Start" menu to open the "Run" dialog box.
Step2
Type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) in the "Open" text box of the "Run" dialog box.
Step3
Click the "OK" button in the "Run" dialog box to bring up the "System Configuration Utility" and close the "Run" dialog box.
Step4
Select the "Start Up" tab in the "System Configuration Utility" dialog box to display the programs that currently run each time your computer is started.
Step5
Uncheck any program from the start up program list that you don't want to run each time the computer is turned on or restarted. You can also choose to use the "Enable All" button to put checks next to all programs or the "Disable All" to uncheck all of the programs.
Step6
Click the "OK" button to close the "System Configuration Utility" dialog box and alter the startup programs for Windows XP.
Step7
Choose to "Restart" or "Exit Without Restart" from the "System Configuration" dialog box that has popped up. You can restart later, but the changes you made will not take affect until you do.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some programs need to be run at startup so Windows XP will be loaded onto the computer properly. These include SystemTray, LoadQM, Scan Registry and LoadPowerProfile. Only disable programs from starting that you are sure you don't need at start up.
