Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Wear something comfortable to ease the situation. If you're not comfortable in your clothes it will make the already uncomfortable situation of being at a party where you may only know the host or hostess that more difficult.
Step2
Arrive on time or slightly late. If you get to the party and it's already going then you can jump right in to talk and mingle with people and you will feel less pressure to socialize until you feel comfortable doing so.
Step3
Keep a drink in your hand. The drink gives you something to focus on so you aren't constantly thinking about how you don't know anyone at the party. Constantly having a drink can also give you an opportunity to engage in conversation with other party-goers.
Step4
Initiate conversation with other guests. This can be difficult, but walk around, make eye contact and if you hear something interesting try to ease your way into the conversation. You can also find another lonely soul and strike up a conversation with them.
Step5
Mind your body language and keep it open. It's easy when you feel uncomfortable to close your body off to the guests. Keep your body open. Unfold and relax your arms, stand upright, put your shoulders back and keep a smile on your face.
Step6
Enlist the help of the host or the hostess if you know them well and they have the time. Nothing will help you socialize better at a party if you have the host or hostess take you around the party to introduce you to everyone.
