1. Talk to fashion design professionals about becoming a fashion designer. This will give you an idea of what it is like to be a fashion designer and will help you decide if you want to become one. Ask questions to find out if they have any tips or secrets on how to break into the industry.
2. Study the fabrics and tools that are used to design clothes. If you have a sewing class at school be sure to take it to learn the basics of garment fabrication. Your local fabric store may also offer sewing classes or classes on design and fabric.
3. Design clothes and wear them. The best way to get experience in designing and constructing clothes is to dive right in and do it. Design and sew your own clothes and wear them to promote your work. Give clothes to friends and family to wear as well.
4. Build a portfolio from the designs you have created. Take pictures of everything you make with yourself or friends wearing the outfits. Put these pictures in a portfolio that you can use to apply to fashion design schools or use to get an internship.
