A hafiz is a Muslim holy person who has taken it upon himself to memorize either the entire Koran or large portions of the hadiths. It is difficult to become a hafiz but many Muslims consider it one of the highest possible human achievements. Read on to learn how to become a hafiz.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Gain a broad and in-depth understanding of the Koran and the comprehensive way of life that the Islamic book dictates. Participate in religious rituals so you can place the passage of Koran or the hadiths in appropriate context as you memorize them.
Step2
Make a plan for the number of verses and passages to memorize each week and day so you can project approximately how long it will take you to become a hafiz.
Step3
Study with a Muslim scholar who can guide you in Koranic meditation and memorization techniques that make your journey to become a hafiz more effective.
Step4
Practice memory exercises a few hours each day so you improve your memory as you learn specific Koranic text.
Step5
Learn one chapter at a time until you have memorized the chapter completely and can recite it reflexively. If you have trouble with certain passages or chapters use visualization techniques to associate sentences with images in order to reinforce the text that you learn.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Koran is available in most of the world's languages but you should learn to read and speak Arabic if possible in order to memorize the Koran in its original version.
