If you are interested in a career working from home, one possibility you might explore is becoming a home-based medical transcriptionist. Though this position most often requires extensive training through accredited coursework, you might become a medical transcriptionist without taking a course if you work hard. Read the steps below to learn how to become a home-based medical transcriptionist without taking a course.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gain experience in the medical field. Work for a doctor's office or hospital and become familiar with medical terminology.

  2. Step 2

Possess superior typing skills. Being a home-based medical transcriptionist requires quick typing skills as you will most likely be paid by the line and have to meet deadlines.

  3. Step 3

Have strong writing and grammar skills. Proper spelling, sentence structure and word knowledge and usage are necessary.

  4. Step 4

Get practice tapes and teach yourself. You can find practice tapes on many online sites offering medical transcription materials.

  5. Step 5

Learn medical transcription from a friend or neighbor who might be in the field. Borrow their books and tapes and find out if they might have the time to take you "under their wing" and teach you the ropes about medical transcription.

  6. Step 6

Invest in a transcriber or some device to access dictation files. A headset and foot pedal are essential components of a transcriber when working as a medical transcriptionist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not expect fast results if you attempt to become a home-based medical transcriptionist without taking a course. Medical transcription is hard enough even with formal training.
  • Buying practice tapes can be relatively costly and results are not guaranteed. You are more likely to succeed if you take medical transcription courses.

on 8/21/2008 As a working medical transcriptionist, believe me when I tell you the above recommendations will never get you a job as a MT. Even people who go to school for this run into problems trying to find a job as they have no experience. Their "insight" should be considered fiction.
