A computer network technician, under the supervision of the project manager, team leader or supervisor of networking, provides technical and maintenance support in the area of system support services. The computer network technician duties include, but are not limited to, providing repairs and troubleshooting. The computer technician employee can telecommute or be housed on site.   1. Step 1

    Analyze and diagnose network computer problems presented by a client. The technician must be proficient in computer hardware and software programs. Good communication and customer service skills are essential.

  2. Step 2

    Recommend solutions and advise client of the necessary steps to implement repairs. Understanding protocol and terminology of the local area networks (LANs) and larger wide area networks (WANs) are required.

  3. Step 3

    Prepare statistical, maintenance and data reports that will be used as repair history for each system. This information will be used as a tracking device to assist in future repairs or updates.

  4. Step 4

    Apply new technology by integrating voice and video systems into the computer network system.

  5. Step 5

    Determine user needs. Develop and write installation procedures for user and maintenance of equipment.

    Get the necessary credentials. There are various certification programs. The A+ certification demonstrates competency as a computer technician. CompTIA A+ demonstrates the ability to install, diagnose, configure, develop, preventive maintenance programs and networking tasks. Network+ measure proficiency in network hardware, installation and troubleshooting. Server+ entails specific hardware and operating systems. Security+ handles computer security issues. Home Technology Integrator (HTI+) specializes in installation and integration of automated home systems. Linux+ test the technician knowledge of Linux operating systems. The Net+ demonstrates technical knowledge of Internet, Intranet, Extranet and e-commerce. Project+ demonstrates the ability to manage projects. Oracle certification demonstrates expertise in the latest protocols of Oracle software and networking. Cisco entails topics from hardware, software, networking, broadband, voice, security and wireless communication.
