A transom knot is a cross knot used primarily for lashing two sticks or poles together at right angles. It is related to the constrictor knot and appears in "Ashley's Book of Knots" as knots 385, 1182 and 1255. Read the following steps to learn how to tie a transom knot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Arrange two poles at right angles to each other so that the vertical pole is on top of the horizontal pole. Bring the working end of the rope over the cross piece from about the two o'clock direction.

  2. Step 2

Loop the working end under the horizontal pole between the left part of the horizontal pole and the upper part of the vertical pole. Bring it back up between the left part of the horizontal pole and the lower part of the vertical pole.

  3. Step 3

Bring the working end diagonally across the cross piece and loop it under the right part of the horizontal pole from the top. Pull the working end back over the cross piece from the bottom of the horizontal pole.

  4. Step 4

Pass the working end over the standing end and push it under the loops made in Steps 2 and 3. Dress the transom knot by pulling the standing end from the two o'clock position and the working end from the eight o'clock position.

  5. Step 5

Secure a transom knot by tying two overhand knots in each end. An additional transom knot on the back of the cross piece will add additional strength.
