Step 1
Assume the hitch will be will be tied to a horizontal pole for this example. The most well-known use of the adjustable hitch is to tie a tent line to a stake.
-
Step 2
Pass the working end around the pole from the right side and pull it forward on the left side. Bring the working end over the standing end and pull it through the bottom of the loop just formed.
-
Step 3
Wrap the working end around the standing end once again with a complete turn, ensuring that the turnings do not overlap. Bring the working end out of the loop and wrap it over the standing end. Pull it back around and push it through the loop just formed.
-
Step 4
Dress the adjustable hitch and snug up the knot. The actual loop does not need to be adjusted until the line is under tension.
-
Step 5
Observe how the taut-line hitch may be adjusted while under a load. To tighten the line, pull the standing end to temporarily reduce the tension and pull the knot forward along the standing end. Reapply the tension by releasing the standing end. Loosen the line by sliding the hitch toward the pole.
