Step 1
Make a secure slip knot such as a bowline or double dragon at the end of the rope. This knot is used to adjust the size of the loop for the bale sling hitch as required.
-
Step 2
Hold the loop of rope formed in Step 1 over the object to be hoisted. Bring the bottom of the loop over itself far enough to form two loops large enough to hold the object. Ensure that these loops do not include the slip knot.
-
Step 3
Pass the object to be lifted through the two loops made in Step 2. The object's weight holds it in the loops. Tighten the slip knot as needed.
-
Step 4
Observe that the bale sling hitch is known by other names such as lark's head or cow hitch when it is used to tie to a lanyard. Ashley's Book of Knots shows the same knot used for this purpose as drawing No. 1694 and No. 2163.

Step 5
Tie a bale sling hitch, now called a lark's head, to an object without free ends, such as a lanyard. This application will require two free-standing ends and is made by passing a bight through the lanyard from behind. The bight is folded over the front and the two standing ends are pulled through the resulting loop.
