An axle hitch is used when a hitch is needed in a place that is difficult to reach or when additional security is required. It is named because it is frequently used to tie a line to an axle as when towing a car. The following steps will show how to tie an axle hitch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Establish the correct orientation. For this example, we will assume the pole is horizontal and that the standing end of rope is fixed to something above us.

  2. Step 2

Form a long bight of rope and pass it under the axle from above. Bring it back up to the front. The working end should be to the right of the standing end but cross over at the bight so that the working end of the bight is to the left of its standing end.

  3. Step 3

Pass the working end of the rope over the standing end and through the bight from below, under the standing end and over the loop just formed by the working end.

  4. Step 4

Make a second loop through the bight with the working end just as described in Step 3. Tie the working end off to the standing end with a second secure knot, commonly a bowline or double dragon.

  5. Step 5

Tie an axle hitch to a real axle. Note that this hitch requires only Step 2 to be performed while lying under the car to be towed. In practice, the bight is made long enough so that it comes out from under the car. The work of actually tying this knot may then be performed much more comfortably.
