An angler's knot is used to tie lines of equal thickness together and is effective with thin lines. It is easy to tie in less than ideal conditions and is less prone to jamming than other knots as it comes off a fishing rod. The following steps will show how to tie an angler's knot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bring two lines together with the working ends pointing in opposite directions such that line A is on the left and above line B. Bend the working end of line A over line B and bring it behind and over both lines.

  2. Step 2

Push the working end of line A through the loop just formed in line A. Note that this results in an overhand knot of line A with line B running through its center, also known as a thumb knot.

  3. Step 3

Use line B to tie a thumb knot around line A. Bring the working end of line B over line A from the front and around both lines. Push the working end of line B up through the loop of line B just formed.

  4. Step 4

Moisten the lines before pulling the angler's knot tight when using monofilament line. This will reduce the friction and consequent weakening of the knot.

  5. Step 5

Dress an angler's knot by tightening the two thumb knots and pulling them together so that they lie next to each other. Note that the thumb knots made according to Steps 2 and 3 will be angled in the same direction to ensure a good fit when they are pulled together.
