An alpine coil is used to carry a rope while it is still attached to a harness. The lead climber in a group will often form rope into an alpine coil while walking over flat ground and later uncoiling it when needed for climbing. The following steps will show how to tie an alpine coil.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Coil the rope while sitting down if possible. The size of the loops can be controlled by wrapping them around a knee and both feet while sitting. Keep the starting end of the rope from getting lost in the coils.

  2. Step 2

Leave at least 2 feet of the finishing end free so that the ends of the rope point in opposite directions. Form a bight at least 1 foot long with the starting end so that it now points in the same direction as the finishing end and place it on top of the coil.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the finishing end tightly around the coil and the bight at least six times. Begin near the starting end and work towards the bight.

  4. Step 4

Insert the finishing end through the bight and dress the alpine coil by pulling the starting end to tighten the bight around the finishing end.

  5. Step 5

Complete the alpine coil by tying a square knot in both ends to keep them from slipping through the wrappings. The coil now may be carried by throwing it over the head and one shoulder, placing it on top of a pack or strapping it under the pack lid.
