How to Make Finger Paint with Shaving Cream
Kids love to create, and you can encourage your children's artistic sensibilities by providing them with the fun, hands-on activity of finger painting. Use shaving cream to make an easy, affordable finger paint for kids to entertain themselves with while you're busy.
Instructions
-
-
1
Get a can of regular, non-gel-based shaving cream.
-
2
Dress your child in a painting smock or an old shirt.
-
-
3
Lay a piece of foil on the table large enough to act as a painting canvas.
-
4
Heat the shaving cream by placing it in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. While heating is not required, letting children finger paint with warm shaving cream can soothe them.
-
5
Spray a few mounds of shaving cream on the foil. You may also place the shaving cream in small disposable bowls or plates.
-
6
Sprinkle a few drops of food coloring on top of the shaving cream. Use a different color for each mound and combine colors to come up with new ones.
-
7
Mix the food coloring and shaving cream. Whip them together with a toothpick or plastic spoon.
-
8
Warn children not to put their hands in their mouths or near their eyes.
-
9
Let the children dip their hands into each mound and start painting on the foil.

Tips & Warnings
Consider folding up the sides of the aluminum foil to keep the shaving cream within its boundaries and off of table surfaces.
For more fun, add a bit of glitter to the shaving cream mounds.
After painting with shaving cream, make the children wash and dry their hands thoroughly to avoid skin irritation.
If children are small enough to be tempted to put their fingers in their mouths, substitute shaving cream with an edible substance like yogurt, pudding or aerosol whipped cream.
