Sometimes, when wounds require immediate attention, standard antiseptics aren't available. The next time you find yourself hurt and in need of a quick healing fix, reach for some sugar. Sugar helps your skin recover and promotes healing by killing harmful bacteria.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Petroleum jelly
  • Sugar
  • Gauze
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive bandage
  1. Step 1

Examine the open wound, ulceration or sore on your skin. Small wounds, ulcerations and sores respond better to sugar treatments than large ones.

  2. Step 2

Get a jar of regular petroleum jelly.

  3. Step 3

Wash and pat dry the affected area. You want to treat a clean area.

  4. Step 4

Dip your fingertip into some petroleum jelly and circle it around your wound. Start at one point and end at the same one. Encase the wound with a line of petroleum jelly.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle some sugar onto your wound. Cover as much of the wound as you can with a pinch at a time. Keep adding sugar until your wound is covered entirely with sugar.

  6. Step 6

Dress the wound with a small piece of gauze. Cut a small square or round section to custom-fit your wound. Add dabs of petroleum jelly to the gauze to help it stick to your skin.

  7. Step 7

Cover the dressed wound with an adhesive bandage.

  8. Step 8

Change the bandage at least once every 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Heal a burned tongue by spooning some sugar onto the burn and letting it dissolve.
  • Apply a little bit of honey along with the sugar to discourage bacteria growth even more.
