How to Use Nouns as the Subject of a Sentence

Nouns are persons, places, things or ideas that usually play a starring role in a sentence. A sentence is, in fact, all about the noun. Sometimes there are two nouns in a sentence; this is especially true if a sentence contains more than one clause.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn to correctly identify nouns and differentiate them from other parts of speech. Remember that there are common nouns, which name any one of a group of persons, places, things and ideas, and proper nouns, which name particular persons, places, things or ideas. Always capitalize the first letter of a proper noun.

    • 2

Get to know pronouns. These are words like "I" or "they" and you use them in place of a noun. Some people confuse pronouns with adjectives.

    • 3

Realize that a noun can sometimes be an adjective. For example, in the phrase "Thanksgiving turkey" turkey is the noun and Thanksgiving is the adjective.

    • 4

Add a verb to your noun. A noun cannot stand alone in a sentence. It must act in some way or have something done to it.

    • 5

Spice up your noun with adjectives. Your sentences will come alive when you describe your noun or nouns.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are an adult learner and not taking an English class, you might want to pick up a book like "Warriner's English Grammar and Composition." These include lots of exercises that will help you to use nouns and pronouns in your sentences.
