There are many methods to making a great independent film. Some indie film makers fund their own productions and make it quite well within the indie circuit while others are not as fiscally fortunate. Film grants are available but can be difficult to locate if you don't know what you're looking for. Follow some steps to get a grant, make an independent film and realize your dreams of indie stardom.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First determine what you want to make an indie film about. Brainstorm your various ideas and try some storyboarding exercises to get a more distinct vision of the direction you want your film to take.

  2. Step 2

Search online for independent film grants and endowments. Pay special attention to grants that fit into the category of film that you want to create: documentary, drama, biographical, comedy, etc.

  3. Step 3

Carefully read the instructions for the grant(s) you have chosen to apply and make a list of the application materials and information you will need to compile. Make a concerted effort to be thorough, especially concerning the financial aspects of your production.

  4. Step 4

Complete your application early to ensure ample time to gather any other application materials that might be necessary for it's completion. Prepare a body of work to send either with your application or upon the grant committee's request.

  5. Step 5

Ensure that you communicate a societal need for your film to be made to ensure ample consideration for being awarded a grant. Check with civil arts foundations for possible unpublicized leads on grants for independent filmmakers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prepare a scene or scenes that you intended to include in your film to solidify your seriousness and dedication to your project.
  • Take a grant writing seminar to compose your grant proposal and get the most out of your endeavor.
  • Make sure your grant reflects both your personality and the vision of the project through your professionalism and thorough planning. Clearly identify your financial needs and why the funds should be given to your project as opposed to another.
