How to Celebrate the First Day of School

For many children, starting school after the summer is a very exciting time. For others, starting school is traumatic and they dread the first day. To get all children in the mood for the big day, celebrate the first day of school with some enthusiasm. Children should look at the first day of school as a pleasurable experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Invite some of your child's classmates over before the first day of school to get the children better acquainted. Have the children play some getting-to-know-you games so they can learn about each other before the first day of school. When they head off to school on the first day, the children will have formed special bonds already.

    • 2

Hold a mini pep rally for your child and some of her classmates. You could have an ice cream social and have the children discuss what they are excited about for this coming year. Invite the teacher if she is able to attend. This way the children can ease all fears by meeting her outside of school for the first time.

    • 3

Bring your child to a store to help select all of his new school clothes. By choosing his own clothes, the child may become more enthused about the first day of school.

    • 4

Allow the child to choose such items as lunchboxes, backpacks, pens and pencils to celebrate the first day of school.

    • 5

Celebrate the first day of school on the real day by taking your child out to a celebration dinner. At the dinner, your child can discuss all of her new classmates, classes and expectations for the year.
