How to Use Google Desktop on a PC

Google Desktop is a program that allows you to use Google to search for specific items on your computer the same way you use Google to search for items on the Internet. Simply type in whatever it is you're searching for and the Google Desktop will search your computer for that information.

Instructions

1. Add a sidebar to view your local weather and time. Use the scratch pad in your side bar and use it to make a list of things to do or upcoming events easily visible on your desktop.

2. Double-click the Google Desktop icon on your task bar to open the search bar.

3. Type in the information you want to search for, such as a family member's name, or a file name. The results will be displayed beneath the search bar. You do not need to hit "Enter."

4. Review gadgets available and insert the ones you like. You can choose from pages of selections including NASA news, national news, movies, Bible verses, games and trivia. Customize your gadgets to create a sidebar tailored specifically to your needs.

Tips & Warnings

• The first time Google Desktop indexes your computer, it will take a long time. It's generally recommended that you perform this action at night or over your lunch hour.
• If you hit "Enter" after typing in your search terms, the search bar will close.
