How to Plan Travel Around Security Alerts

When you are traveling, you never know when there might be a heightened travel alert. Try to stay on top of the news and comply with any requests made by the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA. Be aware that the rules may change at any moment and be willing to comply with the rules as they change. Also know that your flight plans may change as well.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Plan on being early at the airport for check-in regardless of the travel security status. If the recommended time to be early is 2 hours, then be there 2 hours early.
Step2
Be alert to your surroundings. Arrive at the airport with a positive attitude.
Step3
Pack appropriately. Know what's on the banned list. Don't try to sneak something by. The rules are there for everyone's travel safety, including yours.
Step4
Layer the items neatly in your carry-on luggage. Put clothing in the bottom of the carry-on. Set your laptop and other heavy electronics on top of that. Put your 3-1-1 bag on top of that.
Step5
Know what you can put in the 3-1-1 bag. The 3-1-1 bag can contain 3-ounce clear bottles of shampoo and toiletries. You must be able to fit these bottles into one quart-size clear plastic zip-top bag. Each passenger may bring one such bag into the cabin of the aircraft.
Step6
Approach the metal detectors prepared. Be alert to any verbal instructions given by TSA officers. Have your boarding pass and ID in hand. Put your coat, shoes, electronic items, purse and carry-on in appropriate tubs. Remember to remove change and anything metal from your clothing.
Step7
Take the time to make sure you have everything in hand once you pass through security. Many electronics look the same, so be sure you pick yours up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice going through a make-believe metal detector with your young children. Tell them that they may have to let go of you in order to pass through. Also let them know they may have to set toys down momentarily.
