What's in today is out tomorrow, and that's especially true of technology. You think you are buying the latest and the greatest only to find out that a newer, better, sleeker version is already available. This can be seen with cell phones, as consumers upgrade their phones more often than they upgrade their plans. Before you simply throw away your old cell phone, consider the following suggestions for recycling them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Lead a community cell phone collection. If your old phone has inspired you to recycle, take it one step further by organizing a cell phone recycling drive. Set up collection boxes around town and be sure to advertise your efforts.
Step2
Donate your recycled cell phones to the armed forces. Soldiers overseas are in desperate need of ways to communicate with their loved ones at home, and all cell phones are eagerly accepted. Your old phone can provide a soldier with the means to call home.
Step3
Return your old cell phone to the store. It's a good idea before you buy a new phone to inquire as to whether the store will accept and recycle used phones. If not, consider choosing another store that will.
Step4
Locate a women's shelter. Women in trouble who need the sanctuary of a shelter most times don't have cell phones, or had to leave home without them on a moment's notice. If you recycle your cell phone by donating it to a local women's shelter, you may help save a life.
Step5
Give your old cell phone away. There's probably someone in your family such as a grandparent or child, who can't afford to buy a cell phone. Pass yours along and give it a new life with someone you love.
Step6
Search out a recycling center. Use your Internet resources or your local telephone book to find the nearest cell phone recycling center. If you can't get to it by driving, then mail your old cell phone to a recycling center that will put it to good use.
Step7
Call your local religious centers. Churches and synagogues are in touch with the community and know the local shut-ins, nursing home residents and many homeless who don't have the means to buy a cell phone. Your donations can assist your neighbors in need.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that your service is disconnected and all personal information erased before recycling your cell phone.
  • Another way to organize a collection is to host a cell-phone recycling party where the cost of admission is one used cell phone.
