Trade unions exist to further the rights of their members against unfair labor practices and to secure a living wage. Traditionally, trade unions negotiate only rights and benefits for their workers but union organizers can also tackle social reform, not only for members, but also for the community-at-large. If you believe in the mission of trade unions, here is how you can show your support.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Become a member of a trade union. If there is no union where you work, consider starting a chapter. Contact national organizations that provide union support in your chosen vocation and ask for start-up information materials.
Step2
Join in a march or demonstration even if you don't belong to the union sponsoring the event. Unlike other union activities, social movement events need a large attendance to present a unified front to lawmakers.
Step3
Write letters to lawmakers and the media, reinforcing the goals of social movement unionism ideas. By making others aware of the need for change, the movement gains in power and scope.
Step4
Study the emergence model of social movement unionism where it began, in Central America and South Africa. In response to a dire need for social change in those areas, labor unions took up the cause of solidarity for human rights.
Step5
Recruit others to strengthen social movement unionism resolve. A protest with one thousand members has more social impact than a protest with one hundred members.
Step6
Follow the law. Groups with good intentions who break the law, lower the public's impression of themselves and their cause. Even if your social movement is emotional, stay calm and present your case in a mature manner. You will win friends and respect.
