If you dream of playing professional women's basketball in the United States, the Women's National Basketball Association is the place to be. To be eligible to play for the WNBA a woman must meet certain criteria. Rules regulate the players' age and specify that she must have a college basketball career, a college diploma or a professional basketball career before joining the WNBA. It's a difficult goal to reach, but start by following these steps.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Love the game of basketball. Join teams at your local recreation center, YMCA or YWCA. Practice your skills. Play on your school's basketball team. Investigate club teams in your area in order to play team basketball year-round.

  2. Step 2

Play basketball for your high school team and catch the eye of a college recruiter. Ask your coach for assistance in attracting recruiters to see you in action.

  3. Step 3

Agree to play basketball for a college basketball team when asked by the recruiter. Another avenue to the WNBA is to try out for your college team as a walk-on player.

  4. Step 4

Shine on the court. Be a team player and get your college team to the NCAA Championships. Enjoy your college years while you refine your basketball game.

  5. Step 5

Send the WNBA national office quality footage of your time playing basketball in organized games. Include a copy of your resume. Target specific WNBA teams and send them the same information. Include your college basketball career statistics, any awards you received and information about any organized basketball games played overseas along with your international statistics.

  6. Step 6

Look for an invitation to attend the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp. Invitations are sent to the best women basketball players around the world.

  7. Step 7

Accept the WNBA's invitation to join the draft. Wait to be chosen to play for a WNBA team.
