The one-half low is a standard throw in color-guard performances. It's performed by tossing the flag above your head so it completes one full rotation. When performed well, the move looks effortless, even though it takes some practice to master.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the flag held at a 45-degree angle with the silk down. Your left hand should be halfway between the silk and the post with the palm facing away. Your right hand should be about 8 inches into the silk with the palm facing you.

  2. Step 2

Let go of the flag with your left hand first. Your right hand should move upward so it's extended above your head.

  3. Step 3

Throw the flag with your right wrist so the flag does one full revolution in the air above your head.

  4. Step 4

Catch the flag as it is upright in front of you. Your left hand should hold the staff mid-point while your right hand is at the starting position, 8 inches into the silk with your palm facing you. Hold your feet and your body still while performing this skill.

  5. Step 5

Practice until you learn how hard and how high to throw the flag so that it rotates fully and consistently.
