How to Choose a Foster Care Agency

There are a number of different agencies that provide foster care services. The most well-known is Job and Family Services for your county or state, but you are not limited to working only through your local government agency. There are a number of private and specialized organizations you should consider, too.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Decide what type of foster parents you want to be. The different agencies cater to children with different needs. Public agencies care for a wide range of children while private agencies are usually more focused by special needs or specific demographics of people.
Step2
Talk to other foster parents and ask about their experiences with the different agencies. First hand experience is key in making a good decision. Each agency will point out what they believe are their strong points. Find out how you are really supported as foster parents and what types of children each agency actually places.
Step3
Research your options before selecting an agency. Local public agencies will have information on private foster facilities. You can also search on the internet or visit your public library for resources and contact information of nearby foster agencies.
Step4
Figure out how far you are willing to drive. The further you are willing to take your foster children to appointments and visitation, the more agencies you will have to choose from. Most agencies will work with foster parents within a 50 to 60 mile radius of the agency.
Step5
Understand your obligations to the agency you choose. Usually, you have to stay with an agency for at least one year before you can transfer. Make sure that you are with the facility you want to work with or be willing to wait out your time with them.
