Step1
Begin fencing with a French grip. It is the standard for beginners as well as seasoned fencers who enjoy the control it affords. The French grip comes with a smooth surface or a ribbed rubber handle, both of which are popular for foils and epees.
Step2
Learn to exert control over the French grip by moving your fingers as you lunge. Once you have mastered fencing with this grip, it is relatively easy to move on to other grips, which utilize wrist and arm movements more than the subtle moves allowed with the French grip.
Step3
Use your glove size to choose a grip fitted to your hand. More experienced fencers prefer a grip that is 1 size smaller than their glove size, so they can continue to use their fingers for control of the sword.
Step4
Try various grips in your practice sessions before deciding on a favorite for tournament play. Italian, Belgian and Russian grips have pistol-like apertures for placing your fingers. The Visconti grip is the most popular among these versions. Experiment with various types and sizes, as comfort and ease of use plays heavily in your success.
