Books make terrific gifts for virtually any occasion, and Father's Day is no exception. If your father loves to read, he's sure to appreciate a book on his special day. There are an almost limitless number of choices when it comes to Father's Day books. Spend a few moments to pick out the best book for your father, and show him your gift comes from the heart.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find commemorative books about Father's Day. These books, which will usually be at the front of bookstores starting in late May, make touching keepsakes, especially if you write personal inscriptions on the inside covers of the books you pick. You can also order a book online from specialty shops like Kaaterskill Books, such as "Dad Days, 1910 to 1985" by the Father's Day Council and National Father's Day Committee (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Check out "A Perfect Father's Day," by Eve Bunting and Susan Meddaugh, and "Biscuit Loves Father's Day" by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, Pat Schories and Mary O'Keefe, both of which are available from Amazon (see Resources below). Both are designed to teach kids about the purpose of Father's Day, and are good books to read to small children in honor of the holiday.

  3. Step 3

Make your own book for Father's Day. The possibilities with this are almost endless. You could put together a scrapbook along almost any theme, write a short story in which your father is the main character, or assemble a book of poetry about your dad to which each family member has contributed.

  4. Step 4

Scout out your dad's bookshelves to see whether he's a mystery buff, a lover of historical adventures, an avid consumer of science fiction, or a devotee of another particular genre. A librarian or bookseller will be glad to help you hunt down two or three books in that same category. Be sure to make a list of books your father already owns so your gift doesn't overlap.

  5. Step 5

Find out what your father's favorite books were when he was a child. A local shop that specializes in out-of-print books may carry the titles you need, or the sales staff may be able to assist you in locating the book in another specialty store in the country.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy coloring books with a Father's Day theme for small children. Let the kids color the pages, and then give the finished book to Dad as a present.
  • If your father has poor eyesight, look for books that have large print.
  • Most bookstores have a section devoted to large-print books. If your father's eyesight is too bad to read at all, buy him a selection of audio books.
  • Buy an eye-catching bookmark to go along with the books you pick, so your dad doesn't have to dog-ear the pages.
