How to Collect All Three Green Stars in Super Mario Galaxy

In Super Mario Galaxy, there are three power stars that are very different from the rest. They are green stars, and when they’ve all been collected, they unlock a special launch star right outside of the Terrace Observatory. If you’re eager to collect all three, follow these steps to find and collect them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Super Mario Galaxy disc
  • Nintendo Wii Console
  • Wiimote
  • Nunchuck attachment
Step1
During the game, Mailtoad will patrol the area near your starting place and around the Terrace Observatory. He will often deliver letters from the Princess that include 5 1-Up Mushrooms, but in a few other cases, he will deliver distress letters from Luigi. When Mailtoad delivers the letter depicting Luigi trapped in Battlerock Galaxy, you can prepare to collect the first green star.
Step2
Make another attempt at the first main star mission in Battlerock Galaxy. Follow the same path that led you to the first star. When you get to the end, you’ll have to hop from one big silver saucer to another. Luigi is trapped in a glass cage on the underside of the second to last saucer. You’ll need to run to the last saucer, attract the attention of one of the Bullet Bills, run to the underside and finally jump across to the second saucer where Luigi is trapped. Circle the glass cage to get the Bullet Bill to break it open, and Luigi will give you the first green star.
Step3
Once you unlock Buoy Base Galaxy in the Kitchen Observatory, you can get the second green star. Start the only level in this galaxy and dive into the water. Look along the ocean floor for a green warp pipe trapped beneath a glass cage. You’ll need to attract the attention of one of the torpedoes from the nearby launcher and lure him into the cage to break it open. Once you’ve done that, go through the pipe to the next area.
Step4
From here, simply run along the path to another glass cage that contains the second green star. Again, you’ll have to lure a torpedo to break the cage open. This is somewhat difficult because you will need to time your approach to the cage in order to avoid the electrified orbs circling it.
Step5
For the final green star, go to the Bedroom Observatory, fly to Dusty Dune Galaxy and begin the second main star mission. After taking the first launch star in this mission, run to the underside of the first planet you land on. There will be a hungry Luma there, and once you feed it enough star bits, it will transform into another launch star. Take this launch star to a warp pipe, which will take you to a barrel-shaped room.
Step6
To get the green star, you must collect all five silver stars in the room. You will have to run up the wall and past the green line to cause both the floor and ceiling to slowly move upwards. While the floor and ceiling are in motion, roam around to collect the silver stars, making sure that you don’t get trapped and crushed by the rising sand. Once all of the silver stars have been collected, claim your green star and go to the grassy knoll near the Terrace Galaxy to find the newly unlocked launch star.

Tips & Warnings

  • The last green star is the most difficult one to collect. In the barrel-shaped room with the green lines, pick one spot and work your way around the room in one direction to make sure you collect all of the silver stars without missing any.
