In this article, you'll learn how to create beautiful, show-worthy braids for you horses' mane and tail.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • latch hook (can be found at craft store)
  • comb
  • yarn that matches horses' hair
  • scissors
  • patience!
  1. Step 1

Begin by pulling the horses mane to the correct length and desired thickness. A thinner mane is obviously much easier to braid as it will not take so much time to complete.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that the mane and tail are clean, well conditioned and tangle-free. Cut yarn pieces for the amount of braids you desire. Yarn pieces should be 6-12" each.

  3. Step 3

Find a standard measurement of the amount of hair you want to dedicate to each braid when doing the mane. Depending on the thickness of the horses mane, this may be your thumb, or a few fingers length. Keeping a standard measurement will ensure that the braids are very tidy and neat looking.

  4. Step 4

Start by braiding the hair, once you have braided about an inch of hair, fold your yarn piece in half and with the folded part of the yarn toward the base of the mane, braid it into the mane, using the yarn in two of the three strands.

  5. Step 5

Use the latch hook to pull the yarn up through the braid at the base of the mane.

  6. Step 6

Cross the yarn over the top of the mane and criss-cross behind the braid to make a tie in the middle of the braid.

  7. Step 7

Pull the yarn tightly to make the plait lie flat against the horse's neck.

  8. Step 8

To braid the tail, french braid like would braid a person's hair except take the hair from the base of the horse's tail in smaller pieces. This is easiest to do when the tail is wet and well conditioned. Finish the braid the same way you finish the mane braids as described above.
