Part of the fun of St. Patrick's Day is being able to dress in green and look for leprechauns. You can combine the two and have a little fun with your kids by making a leprechaun hat. It is an easy and fun craft project, suitable for preschoolers, elementary school children and the young at heart.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Green watercolor paint
  • Green glitter
  • Black construction paper
  • Yellow construction paper
  • Heavy duty paper bowls (not Styrofoam)
  • Heavy duty paper dinner plates
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Combine a dollop of green watercolor paint and 1 tsp. of green glitter. There should be just enough glitter for the paint to sparkle, but not so much that it clumps together.

  2. Step 2

Purchase heavy duty paper plates and bowls, making sure they are of a cardboard-like material--like those made by Chinet-- since neither foam nor plastic coated plates will absorb the paint. The plates must be larger than the top of the paper bowls.

  3. Step 3

Cut out the inside of the paper dinner plate, so that only the outside rim remains. Place a thin line of glue around the top rim of the bowl, turn it upside down and glue it to the paper ring. The result should look like a small bowler hat.

  4. Step 4

Paint the hat with the paint-glitter mixture and leave it to dry. It should dry pretty quickly because paper products tend to absorb the moisture well.

  5. Step 5

Cut a strip of black construction paper, approximately 1 inch wide and 12 inches long. This will be used as the band for your leprechaun hat. When the bowler hat has dried, glue the strip around the base of the bowl, just above the rim of the hat.

  6. Step 6

Cut a small square of yellow construction paper, slightly wider than the hat band. Cut out the inside of the square to make it look like a buckle. Glue it to the front of the hat band.

  7. Step 7

Place the leprechaun hat on your head at a rakish angle and go searching for your pot of gold.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's best to use a disposable container for mixing paint, as the glitter tends to stick to surfaces for days on end.
  • If the paint doesn't stick to the surface of bowls, add a little bit of glue to the mixture.
